Popcorn Beach Fuerteventura – The Unique “Popcorn” Shore Near Corralejo

Popcorn Beach is one of the most unusual places in Fuerteventura, known for its small white stones that look like pieces of popcorn scattered across the shore.

Located just outside Corralejo, the beach has become a popular stop for visitors exploring the north of the island.

What is Popcorn Beach?

Popcorn Beach gets its name from the unusual shapes of the stones that cover the shoreline. While they resemble popcorn, they are not sand or shells, but naturally formed pieces of marine material shaped over time by the ocean.

The surface of the beach is covered almost entirely in these small, rounded formations, creating a landscape that looks very different from the typical sandy beaches found elsewhere in Fuerteventura.

The science behind it

The “popcorn” stones are formed from fossilised algae known as rhodoliths. These are calcareous algae that grow in layers, forming small nodules on the seabed.

Over time, waves break them loose and roll them back and forth, gradually shaping them into their distinctive rounded forms. As they dry in the sun, they turn bright white, giving the beach its characteristic appearance.

These formations take many years to develop and are part of the local coastal ecosystem. Removing even small amounts can have a lasting impact, as they cannot be quickly replaced.

What to expect

Location and access

Popcorn Beach is located along the north coast, a short drive from Corralejo. The final stretch is reached via a rough track, and parking is usually available nearby.

Removing the stones from Popcorn Beach is not allowed, and visitors are encouraged to leave them where they are.

Although they may look like small souvenirs, taking them away can damage the natural balance of the beach and reduce what makes it unique.
