Antigua is a small inland town in the centre of Fuerteventura. It’s very different from the island’s coastal resorts and gives a better sense of everyday life on the island.

You’re not coming here for beaches. Antigua is about seeing a quieter, more traditional side of Fuerteventura, away from the main tourist areas.

What Antigua is like

Antigua is a working town rather than a tourist destination. It’s calm, low-key and largely untouched by resort-style development.

You’ll find:

  • local cafés and small shops

  • traditional buildings

  • open views across the inland landscape

It’s the kind of place you pass through while exploring the island, rather than somewhere you base your holiday.

It’s also a place many residents visit for everyday things like paperwork and local administration, which adds to its practical, lived-in feel.

What to see

The main point of interest is the Museo del Queso Majorero which focuses on the island’s cheese production and rural history.

There are also a number of restored windmills in and around Antigua, which are some of the most recognisable features of the area.

The island’s windmills were traditionally used to grind grain into gofio, a staple food in the Canary Islands.

You can also see the old donkey-driven mill wheel, which was historically used alongside the windmills and gives a good insight into how the island’s agricultural systems once worked. The last working donkey has now been retired, and it has not been replaced, which reflects a shift away from using animals in this way.

Is Antigua worth visiting

Antigua is worth a short stop if you are exploring the centre of the island or want to see something beyond the coastal resorts.

It’s not a destination in the same way as Corralejo or Morro Jable, but it adds context to the island and shows a more local side of Fuerteventura.

Getting there

Antigua is easy to reach by car and sits roughly in the middle of the island. It’s about a 20-minute drive from Caleta de Fuste and a similar distance from the airport.

Antigua isn’t a place you come to for attractions, but it’s worth a stop if you want to see a more everyday side of Fuerteventura. It adds a bit of context to the island and shows how much of life here happens away from the coastline.
