La Pared is a quiet coastal area on the west coast of Fuerteventura, known for its wild Atlantic views, strong waves and laid-back atmosphere. It sits along the natural divide between the northern and southern parts of the island and offers a very different experience from the more developed resort areas.

La Pared is a quiet coastal area on the west coast of Fuerteventura. Its name means “the wall”, referring to the historic structure that once divided the island into separate territories.

Beaches in La Pared

The beaches in La Pared are rugged and exposed to the Atlantic, with powerful waves and a dramatic coastline. They are popular with surfers but are generally not suitable for swimming due to strong currents and changing conditions.

Instead, these beaches are best enjoyed for their scenery, long walks and the raw natural beauty of the west coast.

Surfing in La Pared

La Pared is one of the island’s recognised surf spots, attracting those looking for consistent waves in a quieter setting. Conditions can vary, but the area is well suited to experienced surfers and those wanting to escape the busier beaches elsewhere on the island.

Coastal walks and views

The coastline around La Pared is ideal for walking, with paths along the cliffs offering wide views over the Atlantic. The area is especially popular at sunset, when the light creates dramatic colours across the ocean and surrounding landscape.

La Pared is particularly known for its sunsets, with views across the Atlantic making it one of the best places on the island to watch the sun go down.

La Pared is often visited alongside Ajuy when exploring the west coast.

The wall that divided the island

La Pared takes its name from a historic wall that once divided the island into two territories. Although only remnants remain today, the wall marked the boundary between the kingdoms of Maxorata and Jandía before the Norman conquest.

This division dates back to the time of the island’s original inhabitants, the Mahos, who lived on Fuerteventura for centuries before European arrival.

Figures such as Tibiabin and Tamonante played an important role in guiding society during this period.

Today, parts of the wall can still be seen in the landscape around La Pared, offering a glimpse into the island’s early history.
